RACING DAVE: ARE YOU LEFT OR RIGHT?

Picture yourself in this scenario, and decide which rider is most like you.

Two riders are traveling down a dual carriageway (two lanes each way), each in their own lane and close to the speed limit, but side by side. Traffic is light. They are approaching a crossroad, controlled by traffic lights, and those lights are green.

The rider in the left lane thinks, “Those lights have been green for quite a while, I’ll speed up to make sure I get through them before they change”. The rider in the right lane thinks, “Those lights have been green for quite a while, I’ll slow down in case they change”.

As they get closer to the intersection, to no one’s surprise, the green changes to amber. The rider on the left passes through the intersection before the lights change to red, and the rider on the right safely stops.

Each rider has correctly interpreted what is likely to happen, and taken for them the appropriate action. Neither is wrong, yet their behavior is completely different.
