Young Kiwi road racers made another big impression at the final round of this year’s European Junior Cup at the Magny-Cours circuit in France last weekend, second-generation Rangiora rider Jake Lewis finishing second, Auckland-based compatriot Daniel Mettem sixth.
Mettem has been one of the standout competitors in this year’s inaugural Cup series, which pits riders between the ages of 14 and 17 against each other on identically-prepared Kawasaki Ninja 250R street bikes.

Heading into the final round in France, the 17-year-old from Te Atatu in Auckland’s inner-west, could, in fact, have finished third overall if he had finished third in the race.

Unfortunately a last lap dive from fourth place didn’t quite come off and he ended up sixth in the race and fourth overall in the series points standings.

Lewis, meanwhile, ended up 11th overall after only contesting three of the six rounds.
