The much anticipated Speedscan-sponsored Hyosung GT250R Cup single-make road race series kicks off this weekend at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

The Pukekohe round is the first of five rounds run in association with the Auckland Motorcycle Club’s annual summer series.

The Hyosung GT250R Cup series is for riders of standard production Hyosung GT250Rs (all years/models) which comply with Motorcycling New Zealand’s Pro Lite rules. And – get this! – there is a $10,000 prize pool!

At the end of the series the overall winner will also receive the Hyosung GT250R Cup presented by two-time world champion Graeme Crosby.

The series' grid has been capped at 35 and the format at each meeting will follow a similar pattern.

There will be practice first, then qualifying (with the fastest qualifier earning a special superpole award) followed by two races. The first will have a conventional static fastest-from-the-front grid, but the second will utilise a standing Le Mans-style start.

Interest, understandably, is high with a broad range of young and not-so-young riders entered including recent European Junior Cup fourth place getter Daniel Mettem.
