Australian Casey Stoner edged close to Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa's lap record at France's Le Mans circuit, clicking off a best lap of 1m 33.740s in the second free practice session.

Once again Pedrosa was second fastest while Jorge Lorenzo on the factory Yamaha jumped up to third fastest after being sixth the first session.

Alvaro Bautista on the San Carlo Gresini Team's Honda was fourth fastest ahead of Texan Ben Spies on the second of the factory Yamahas.

Still proving he has yet to master the Ducati he has had a major role in developing, Valentino Rossi was ninth fastest in the second session with a best lap of 1m 35.112s - which although a staggering 1.3 seconds away from the Aussie maestro's blistering pace at the head of the field, was actually an improvement on the rather anaemic 1m 35.829s lap he managed to record in the first session.

As a result, the Italian went from tenth to ninth on the time sheet, and although he managed to best team-mate Nicky Hayden in this session, he still had the embarrassment of being bettered by the privateer Pramac Ducati of Hector Barbera.
