As this website exclusively reported on May 25, a trans-Tasman challenge will take place at Waikato’s Hampton Downs circuit over Labour Weekend in October. The event will be for Classic and Post Classic motorcycles and will be run as a joint promotion between the New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Racing Register (NZCMRR), the NZ Post Classic Racing Association Inc. and the NZ Sidecar Racing Association.

According to event promoter Robert Cochrane, “we have extended an invitation to our Aussie brothers who assure us they will provide a couple of container loads of bikes and Formula One Sidecars, complete with a bunch of top name riders to race them.”

The three day event will include a number of Classic racers as well as Classic Superbike riders from Australia plus F1 sidecars in action along with the locals.

Included in the line-up is likely to be Aaron Slight’s old Kawasaki team-mate Rob Phillis, former multi-Australian Superbike Champion Shaun Giles – who will be seeking redemption after getting a spanking last time he raced in New Zealand – along with Rex Wolfenden, builder of the T-Rex Honda racers, Glen Kelliher and Glen Hindle.

The meeting will be run as the second leg of the Trans-Tasman Trophy held annually since 2005 at the Barry Sheene Festival of Speed at Sydney’s Eastern Creek in late March.

The Trophy has been won once each by Australia and New Zealand with Australia being the current holders, after they mounted a last minute charge to win by 205 points to 198 in March this year.

The Trans Tasman Challenge is a team event and is open to all comers, with local riders being matched with an opposing team member from the same class with similar lap times.

The event will cover all classes from vintage right through to pre-1989 Post Classic machines, along with modern Formula 1 and Formula 2 Sidecars, although there is word that a 1960 works Zundapp sidecar may make it onto the programme…

The event will be a three day affair held Saturday, Sunday and Monday with practice and qualifying on Saturday and possibly one round of racing.

Feature races will include the Classic Junior TT, Classic Senior TT, NZ Post Classic GP plus the Trans Tasman Trophy.

“There will be social functions on Saturday and Monday nights and we will be offering psychological help for soundly beaten Australians!!!” boasts promoter Cochrane. “We will also, with a bit of luck, manage to squeeze in a few feature races – yet to be determined. We’re hopeful there will be plenty of trade stands, displays too,” he says.

“We’re optimistic this will become an annual event and as there has been a lot of interest from Australian riders, we reckon the competition will be fierce indeed – across all classes. So make sure you and your machine are ready to go for what is shaping up as a cracker.”

The event is shaping as THE road-racing event to attend in New Zealand this year so mark October 19, 20 & 21 on your calendar and get along to Hampton Downs.
