Palmerston North 20-year-old Levi Sherwood has elevated himself to the ranks of New Zealand’s best paid sports professionals after winning the $US1 million Red Bull X-Fighters 2012 World Tour in Sydney on Saturday.

Heading into the Sydney final the KTM rider was tied on points with penultimate round winner Thomas Pages (Yamaha) of France. But a win at the final gave the series title – and with it the $US 1 million prize purse – to the Kiwi.

Pages put up a brave fight but lost out when he fell – albeit without injury - after executing one of his tricks. Top local rider Josh Sheehan (who won at Cockatoo Island last year) also ran Sherwood close but lost points with two minor falls.
