MV STARTS FASTEST AT DONINGTON

Leon Camier on the MV Agusta at Donington.

In an interesting series of qualifying sessions for this weekend's Donington Park round of the eni Superbike World Championship, an MV Agusta topped the time sheets after the first practice session! Yes, Leon Camier posted the fastest time, 1m 29.314s, when the first 50 minute session concluded.  Camier, a former British Superbike Champion, rides for MV Agusta Reporto Corse.

However, that was merely the beginning.  Camier's opening gambit was almost two seconds outside the pole time Kawasaki's Tom Sykes set for last year's race (1m 27.378s).

Sykes was second fastest in that opening session with a 1:29.349 and the top ten were within a second of Camier's lap.

Camier improved in the second session, turning a 1:28.864 but that was only good enough for sixth fastest time.  Sykes topped that session with a 1:28.574 followed by Ducati's returning Davide Giugliano (1:28.729), championship leader Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki - 1:28.741), a surprisingly fast Ayrton Badovini (BMW - 1:28.864), Chaz Davies (Ducati - 1:28.794) and then Camier.

Tom Sykes topped the second and third sessions on his
Kawasaki ZX-10R at Donington

Between the first and second sessions, the track temperature increased from a cool 22 degreees Celcius to 28 degrees.

The track gained another two degrees by late afternoon and Sykes got down almost to his lap record, with a 1:28.172 to head the third 'free' practice session.

Camier struggled to improve much past his second session time on the MV and ended up ninth fastest on the combined time sheets from these first three sessions, with a best of 1:28.756, just over a tenth of a second quicker that in free practice two.

Still, that was good enough to get him into Superpole 2, which sees the top ten fastest riders from the three 'free' practice sessions, plus the fastest two from Superpole 1, battling to sort the order for the first four rows of the grid.

Here are the combined times for the first three 'free' practice sessions:
